Discovering Augustine’s De civitate Dei: five lectures with Donatella Pagliacci in Sansepolcro
Saint Augustine’s thought and Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas at the heart of a series of philosophical, theological, and cultural reflections.
A series of lectures entitled “Knowing and Loving Augustine of Hippo’s De civitate Dei: The Magnifica Humanitas of Pope Leo XIV and Saint Augustine” will begin on Friday, October 30, 2026, in Sansepolcro, featuring Professor Donatella Pagliacci, a member of the Scientific Committee of the Centro Studi Internazionale Leone XIV and an academic at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.
The initiative, presented as part of the activities of the Università dell’età libera of Sansepolcro and the Parish of the Cathedral, will consist of five meetings dedicated to revisiting one of the foundational works of Augustinian thought, highlighting its contemporary relevance and its relationship with some of the major questions of our time.
The lectures will explore themes such as human dignity, the common good, the relationship between the two cities, and education for peace, paying particular attention to Saint Augustine’s spiritual and intellectual legacy in the teaching of Pope Leo XIV.
Lecture programme
All lectures will take place at the Meeting Room of the Municipal Library in Sansepolcro, beginning at 5:00 p.m., according to the following schedule:

Augustinian thought and contemporary challenges
The lecture series provides an opportunity to explore the continuing relevance of De civitate Dei, a work in which Saint Augustine develops a profound reflection on the meaning of history, human coexistence, and the orientation of individual and collective life.
The themes of human dignity, the common good, and peace offer a framework for bringing the heritage of Augustinian thought into dialogue with contemporary social challenges, connecting philosophy, theology, and civic responsibility.
Through its From the Scientific Community section, the Centro Studi Internazionale Leone XIV highlights this educational initiative, acknowledging its relevance to the Centre’s fields of study and research and promoting the scholarly and cultural contributions of its wider community.
